The Mission to the Moon was firmly afoot with the myriad of tests and flight results of Apollo 9. The mission primarily was to test the Lunar Module (LM) for lunar orbit operations in preparation of the moon landing fully engaging its descent and ascent propulsion systems. Critical in the determination the crew could fly it independently and then dock with the CSM again. Other tests included the use of the portable life support system backpack outside the LM cabin. The testing was very successful proving the lunar module worthy of crewed spaceflight setting up further testing by Apollo 10. Apollo 9 also was the first flight allowed to bring personal mixed tapes (one each) to play on Sony Walkman cassette players which became quite newsworthy.
Rusty Schweickart was the first to test the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) "backpack" which allowed maximum mobility due to unit being self contained for oxygen, water for cooling and expulsion of CO2. A more advanced model was then created for the Apollo 11 crew on the moon.
