STS-51L Challenger Disaster. Professional VHS Copy of NASA Investigation, Post-Accident Forensic Reports, Tribute Materials. Clark McClelland's collection of STS-51L, Shuttle Challenger tragedy. There is a VHS copy of the Official NASA technical analysis of the cause of the explosion that killed seven astronauts on Jan. 28, 1986. There is an original transcript of the Post-Accident Press Conference (7 pages), the original letter to all KSC employees regarding the tragedy by R.G. Smith. There are three sequentially shot B&W images with typed snipes affixed identifying dark smoke beginning to appear between the solid rocket booster and external tank which we have never offered before.
From a civilian who was simply invited to watch the launch are 30, 4 x 6" photographs, developed at a Kodak kiosk that capture the first 17 seconds beginning with liftoff, in perfect focus, with every sequence of the explosion captured better than anything we have seen before in print. There are 10 color lithos, multiple copies of the crew, Christa McAuliffe (Teacher in Space) and Barbara Morgan Teacher in Space with McAuliffe. There are also two B&W stills, one of Ellison Onizuka and Judy Resnik.
There are 20 copies of the STS 51-L Crew Memorial Service program held at Kennedy Space Center. There is a beautiful 51-L crew patch affixed to a memorial page by EG&G Florida with the quote "A man's reach should always exceed his grasp, or what is heaven for?" Time, Newsweek and Collector's Edition magazines and NASA Activities and NASA Spaceport News tributes and a special issue printing for NASA of "High Flight" in memory of Challenger. Finally we have a B&W still of two products by Thiokol who manufactured the "O" rings which malfunctioned in the unexpected cold temperature on that day.
In a second notebook is a comprehensive volume, nearly 200 pages entitled Space Shuttle News Reference issued by NASA covering every aspect of Shuttle operations. Clark McClelland kept this notebook as part of his Space Shuttle STS-51L collection.
