Pinchas Shaar: "The Fisherman" Original Oil on Canvas (1923-1996) Pinchas Shaar, native of Poland, found himself at age 16 in 1939, spending five years of his youth, when Germany invaded Poland in a concentration camp near his hometown. Upon the war's end, the artist swiftly relocated to Munich, where he worked as a theatrical artist while studying technique at the Munich Academy, then to Paris, where he finished his schooling between the Grande Chaumiere and Beaux-Arts.
Shaar immigrated to Israel in 1956, where he earned deep respect as an illustrator of Hebrew literature, the prophets, Jewish folklore and history, and fantastical themes and symbols. His work is instantly recognizable especially given his command of color, whimsy and the fantastic. In that regard he certainly tipped his hat to Marc Chagall and other modernist artists of the time.
"The Fisherman" or "Fish Seller" is a phenomenal example of Shaar's work. Boasting an explosion of earth tones that create a strong visual impact and convey a sense of joy and the whimsical (with the cordovan color background a flawless choice). The Painting is in excellent condition with only the usual deep toning on verso of canvas. Schaar has signed boldly on verso in black marker and dated 1963.
