Stunning Etrog Box, late 19th Century 84 Zolotnik Silver Fineness Owned by Grandson of Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk. Beautiful antique etrog box from Poland in 84 Zolotnik silver. (punched/hallmarked 84) the standard silver fineness for Russia and Polish areas controlled by the Russian Empire beginning in 1798. Extremely well crafted with etched criss crossed bands having foliate designs inside the bands. Box sits on four, squat round balls, the lid hinge in excellent condition and best, the lid fits squarely and tightly to the box. 3 x 3.5 x 5.5". Silver etrog would easily be graded very fine and weighs 17 ozt.
This box, crafted in Poland, was owned by a descendant of Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk, one of the founding Rebbes of the Hasidic movement and one of the most significant Jewish leaders of the 18th Century. The etrog box has the initials engraved "MP" which belonged to Rabbi Menachem Mendel Freiman born in Jerusalem and grandson of Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk which was then passed onto the great grandson.
A lovely and historic piece to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Sukkot.
