Impressive Model of the USS Shenandoah, the First of Four Rigid Navy Airships Built Between 1922-23 at Lakehurst, New Jersey. One of the most impressive airship models we have ever offered, the USS Shenandoah acquired by a collector of airship history spanning over two decades. The model measures 80 x 12" (6'8" x 12") and rests on an oak cradle with USS Shenandoah in bold block letters set against a red, white and blue banner. The actual size of the airship was 680 feet by 78.9 feet, and flew 56 flights before crashing in Caldwell, Ohio on September 25, 1925 due to a violent thunderstorm. 14 crewmembers were killed including Captain Zachary Landsdowne but 29 crewmen did survive.
The model is made of balsa, cotton fabric, heavy stock paper, and styrofoam with exceptional precision. We note a couple of tiny blades missing from a propeller, but otherwise this model created some 25+ years ago for an exhibit is in excellent condition and again, quite impressive.
