Stewart, Charles -- War-date Letter re Transferring Sailors to the USS Constellation, Under Stewart's Command (1778-1869) U.S. naval officer who commanded a number of ships, including USS Constitution, which he took command of on July 18, 1813 and captured two British warships with his single ship; he received a Congressional Gold Medal for this feat. Autograph Letter Signed, Dec. 31, 1812, 1p, 9x7¾", no place, to Capt C[harles] Morris, who commanded the USS Adams at this time: "Please to deliver the Seamen orderd to be turned over to the Constellation under my comd. to Comdr. T. Tingey who will forward them to the ship." Seal tear affects only the word "Sir". Charles Stewart also fought in the Quasi War with France, against the Barbary pirates, and against slavers in the Caribbean. He was the last surviving naval officer to have served in the War of 1812, holding the record for the longest active duty career; he was promoted to rear admiral on the retired list in 1862.
