Magnificent and Rare Hermès Chess Set, Large Size with Roll-Out Leather Board. Stunning Chess Pieces Hand-Carved of Cassia and Mahogany. One of the most striking, elite and beautiful home furnishings from the master craftsman and designers of Hermès: the Samarcande Chess Set. The design house still makes chess sets but this rare and elite set, substantially larger, was available for a very short time and only a very few available in the early 2000s. Today the set remains highly prized with each chess piece exquisitely hand carved and polished and each a work of art. Further, the design is very much a call back to the forward thinking design elements of the Mid-Century Modern movement.
The luxe Clemence leather chess board "mat" is 36" square. The tallest chess piece is 9.25" with the pawns each 4.5". There is only the slightest evidence of use. It appears this was more a display piece. Set was acquired at Hermès in Beverly Hills. They provided one of their largest boxes to accommodate the chess pieces each wrapped in bubble. But no custom case or boxing was created specific for this set. Leather mat rolls for storing easily.
Retailed original for $21,000 but we note recent sales far exceeding the original price and not anywhere in this find of condition.
