Two Framed and Signed Colonial CurrencyNotes: Francis Salvador and Benjamin Levy, Early American Jewish History. 1.) A South Carolina Three Pound Note, November 15, 1775. This note hosts the very historic signature of the first American Jewish Legislator, Francis Salvador. He was a descendent of a wealthy Portuguese family who settled in London. Financial setbacks related to the Lisbon earthquake and the failure of the Dutch East Company led him to immigrate to South Carolina in 1773. He served in the Provincial Congress, as seen by his signature on the note offered here. Salvador was the first Jew to lose his life while fighting in the American Revolution in 1776.
2.) Continental Currency, 8 Spanish Milled Dollars, November 2, 1776. This note is signed by Benjamin Levy, the only known Jewish signer of Continental Currency.
