Pike, Zebulon -- War-date Note Authorizing Payment For Service at Plattsburgh, New York (1779-1813) American brigadier general, explorer, writer, cartographer, and scientist, for whom Pikes Peak was named. He was sent twice by Thomas Jefferson to follow up on the original Lewis and Clark expedition; he mapped and wrote much of the American West. In the War of 1812 he fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe and later in the invasion of Canada under Henry Dearborn. Pike acknowledges, discharges funds, and signs on verson of a note signed by John Roberts authorizing payment for Jesse Tripp who worked 16 days as a laborer at the camp near Plattsburgh for the 1st Division of the northern army of the United States during the month of January 1813. Pike signed less than three months before his death in combat at age 34 in the Battle of York.
