Rodgers, John - ALS as Naval Commissioner to Capt. Charles Morris (1772-1838) US Naval officer who fired the first cannon shot of the War of 1812. Autograph Letter Signed as Naval Commissioner, Washington, 1p, 12¾x8", July 12, 1816. Marked "Private," to Capt. Charles Morris, informing him that Rodgers believes that the Navy establishment at Newport will be broken up. "If however this is not done you will without doubt be appointed to the command of it…In the event of the Newport stations being abandoned you may confidently calculate on employment that will keep you on full pay…" In addition to his service in the War of 1812, Rodgers commanded the USS John Adams in the suppression of the Barbary pirates and also saw service in the Quasi War with France. Rodgers and Morris were both important US Naval officers.
